How to Diagnose Performance Before Training
Before choosing an intervention, leaders need enough evidence to distinguish a capability problem from other causes that produce the same visible performance gap.
Start with the performance signal
Define the observable gap precisely: what result or behaviour is below expectation, where it occurs, when it began and whether it is concentrated or widespread.
Compare conditions
Look for contrasts. Do comparable people under different managers perform differently? Do similar branches with the same training produce different results? Did performance change after a process, system or incentive change?
Test more than one explanation
Compare plausible causes instead of accepting the first explanation. The discipline is not endless analysis; it is enough comparison to avoid committing to the wrong intervention.
Define the expected movement
Before action begins, state what should improve and when. If the movement does not appear, treat that failure as new evidence and reopen the diagnosis.
